Description
In a rare break in the action, I could catch lunch being delivered, probably to one of the vendors in the busy Namdaemun market in Seoul. I assumed that the food trays were carried on the head due to the crowds, but carrying things on your head in daily life is very common in many parts of the world. So I shouldn't make assumptions! However, it did seem to work very well in this market, since the people delivering the food could easily thread their way through quite heavy crowds. Namdaemun Market is one of the oldest continually running markets in South Korea, and one of the largest retail markets in Seoul. The streets in which the market is located were built in a time when cars were not prevalent, so the market itself is not accessible by car. The main methods of transporting goods into and out of the market are by motorcycle and hand-drawn carts. It occupies many city blocks, which are blocked off from most car traffic due to the prevalence of parking congestion in the area. Much of the market is outside, but there are also many stores crammed into interior spaces. If you are claustrophobic, don't venture here! Sometimes there is barely enough room to walk down the aisles, and if someone stops to look at something, moving along is difficult! The stores are crammed floor to ceiling and the merchants themselves sometimes have no more space than a chair to operate from. At least here on the street, things were more open!
