Appleby, in Cumbria hosts one of the oldest traditional horse gatherings in the UK Appleby horse fair is the largest and one of the oldest fairs of its kind anywhere in Europe. It dates back to the reign of James II who granted a Royal Charter allowing a horse fair near the River Eden around 300 years ago. the event is hugely popular with travellers from near and far, tourists and of course photographers who enjoy this unique event to capture images of painted caravans,horse races by bareback riders and the traditional river Esk dip.
