Description
Lilac.
THE MEANING & SYMBOLISM OF
LILAC
The story of lilac, according to Greek mythology, begins with a beautiful nymph named Syringa (lilacs botanical name). Captivated by her beauty, Pan, the god of the forests and fields, chased Syringa through the forest. Frightened by Pan's affections, Syringa escaped him by turning herself into an aromatic bush ' the flower we now refer to as lilac.
The 8th wedding anniversary flower and the state flower of New Hampshire (symbolizing the hardy character of the Granite States citizens), lilacs are frequently considered a harbinger of spring, with the time of their bloom signaling whether spring will be early or late. In the language of flowers, purple lilacs symbolize the first emotions of love, while white lilacs represent youthful innocence.
Purple and Lilac Colors.
In Western Culture, the color purple is a symbol of wealth and royalty. People that rule places are often seen wearing the color purple. It is sometimes seen as artificial because it isn't often seen in nature.
Purple is also the color of mourning widows in Thailand. It was also a color of mourning in the U.S. and England -- used by more distant family members or at later stages of mourning for close members (such as widows after 1 year). Because of this use purple and lavender, which was also used, are sometimes considered unlucky colors.
Purple is sometimes associated with spirituality. This is because purple, or violet, is at the top of the color spectrum. Of the colors in the visible spectrum, it is the one that vibrates at the highest frequency. Some people believe that when we become more spiritual, we too raise the rate at which we vibrate. Purple, or violet, is associated with the seventh chakra, located at the crown of the head. This is the chakra of connection to spirit.
