Description
Rhythm and blues: In the mid 60's a radio station in Kingston began brodcasting live blues performances from the Prince George Hotel. That was where I first heard Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee and I was hooked on blues from that point on. Every Friday we would try to get in to hear groups such as Downchild, Powder Blues, and Whisky Howl but when it was rumored that Belushie and Akroyd might show up you couldn't get near the place. Sonny Terry was born in North Carolina and in two seperate chilhood accidents he lost the sight of one eye and then the other. Brownie McGhee was born in Tenessee and while a young boy was striken with Polio but that did not stop them. They went on the road playing their music to aproximate some kind of living and they met up in 1940. In the early 40's they became the first black artists to break through to the white audience.
