Description
Breeding colonies of Lesser Flamingoes (Phoenicopterus minor) and Greater Flamingoes (Phoenicopterus ruber), rarely seen, on soda flats miles from shore in the middle of Lake Natron, Tanzania. Lake Natron is a soda lake with high levels of sodium carbonate. Flamingoes feed on the cyanobacteria which thrive in this environment and give the flamingoes their pink color.
