Lemons with red vase

Description
The idea for this setup started with the vase that one of my students brought to the studio. Intricate ceramic glaze has complexity of wide range of colors. However, the most dominant color was in purple and cold reds that transformed into a purple at the bottom. Several color studies proved that color pallet should be yellow - purple. The subject of lemons provided that complementary division.
The painting is compositionally asymmetrical and balance was calibrated between the mass of lemons on the left and the vase on the right. Another very facile balance was aimed with the "balancing act" of the branch on top of the vase. Direction of the branch, rhythm and rotation of the leafs and connection with the solitary "stopper" lemon on the right created circular movement back to the main subject. Square on the left encapsulates the main masses and reciprocal is reserved for the form on the right with limited light reflexion at the base of the ceramic. The drapery was edited a bit in order to repeat the blues tones in ceramic.
The natural North light was filtered with complex arrangement of boards in order to darken some parts of the background. This background is predominantly yellow with muted hue and complementary purple that made chromatic grayed darker tone.
The subject offered variety of edges and textures. It was a live demo for some of my students in the Studio who take a great deal of pleasure peaking over my shoulder with the advices and encouragements. The technical approach would be much different had I painted it without the whole group watching. Demonstrations take some technical detours for the sake of explanations, problem has to be created in order to be fixed and expansions of the process sometimes produce the result that was not originally desired.
For more info about the future demonstration in my Studio go to www.danpetrovart.com and see upcoming events and classes. All the groups restricted to eight participants.
