Description
Last One Home
A pair of tail end charlies make a lonely way home to base at Polebrook, Northamptonshire after a mission in late 1943. The last aircraft in each of the high, lead and low formation boxes were classed as tail end charlies - not an enviable place to be. Now lagging even further behind the two 351st Group B17s slip over the cloud cover as an early winter sunset lights up the sky.
The 351st were one of the first groups, of the US 8th Air Force, to start operations and continued combat missions until April 1945. The group flew 311 combat missions for a loss of 175 B17s and crews - not an atypical loss rate for daylight operations.

It is possible that you refer to a Robert Taylor painting - 'Out of Fuel and Safely Home' - this is nearest that I can think of that is close to your description. There is also 'Winter's Welcome' which I find quite emotive. Illustrations of these are at http://www.roberttaylorprints.com/ - his work has always driven my ambition - would that I could get anywhere near. Thanks for your interest, good to hear from you. Pat

Beautiful shot,, decades ago at a military show, I saw a print of a B-17, two engines turning, terrible AA damage coming in to land in GB, one wheel down.. Should have bought it then, thought it was Last one home,, but??? Any help or direction you could provide?? Still causes me to tear up,, any help would be appreciated..
