John Edson Sweet (1832-1916), American mechanical engineer. Sweet built the first micrometer calipers in America, used for making tools. He also invented the straight line engine. Sweet was the first president of the Technology Club of Syracuse, USA, which was founded at his home in 1903. The club was founded to promote the exchange of ideas about technology. Sweet was a winner of the John Fritz medal, awarded by the American Association of Engineering Societies.
