Description
Quarterback Joe Montana came out of Notre Dame with a national title under his belt, but few experts predicted the tremendous professional career which awaited him. In his second year in the National Football League, 1980, he began starting for the San Francisco 49ers at id-season. The following year, he led the 49ers into the playoffs for the first time since 1972 and then to a victory in Super Bowl XVI (1982)
Montana engineered three additional Super Bowl titles XIX (1985), XXIII (1989) and XXIV (1990). In each championship game, he passed beautifully, showed excellent mobility and solid judgment, three times; he was voted Super Bowl MVP (1982, 1985, and 1990).
Entering the 1994 season Montana was ranked first all-time in passing efficiency (93.1), fourth all-time in TD passes (257) and fifth all-time in yards passing (37, 268). He had led the NFL in passing five times and has been voted NFL-MVP twice (1989, 1990). Joe Montana stands tall in the pocket, has an exceptionally quick release and is not afraid to take a hit. He has broken the heart of numerous defensed over the years by running for big gains when his receivers were not open. No quarterback has ever been as adept as Montana in bringing his team back from the brink of defeat. His end-of-the-game fourth quarter drives and last second touchdowns make his teams a threat until the final gun sounds.
As courageous a player to take a snap from center, he returned toward the end of the 1986 season, against doctors advice, after having undergone low back surgery. He sparked San Francisco to three straight wins and a playoff birth, Montana also missed all of the 1991 season and most of the 1992 season after reconstructive ligament surgery on the elbow of his throwing arm.
Traded to Kansas City Chiefs in 1993, Joe Montana guided them to two straight play-off appearances. Frustrated by the Chiefs apparent lack of firepower, and thus what he perceives to be their slim chances to go all the way to the Super Bowl, the great Montana has retired.
Joe Montana clearly stands equal to the greatest quarterbacks of all-time including Otto Graham, Johnny Unitas, Bart Starr and Terry Bradshaw. And, when it comes to winning the big game in the clutch, Montana has no equal!
