Description
JEROME'S POWDER BOX CHURCH by PRISCILLA BURGERS
The Powder Box Church, located in Jerome, Arizona, gets its name from its unique construction. The building was built by Sabino Gonzales, with the help of the congregation, from 1939 to 1941, with stucco, wire mesh and disassembled wooden blasting powder boxes. The church families were Mexican American mining families that were victims of racial prejudice from the Anglo Methodists who would not allow the Mexicans to enter their church.
