Description
Made of marble and mounted on a base that is positioned parallel with the equator, its gnomon is made of iron and indicates the time. The dial is tilted with the gnomons pointing to the north and south poles, respectively. This particular sundial stands in front of the Hall of Supreme Harmony as a symbol that the Emperor was the source of the standards of time. The Hall of Supreme Harmony is the largest hall within the Forbidden City.
This photo was captured around 11AM, according to my watch. Looking up at this ancient sundial, it was pretty accurate!
