Description
Infected shoulder capsule. Artwork showing an infection of the capsule of the glenohumeral joint of the shoulder, as seen in section from the side. This is a ball-and-socket joint, with the head ('ball') of the humerus (upper arm bone, right) covered in cartilage and connective tissue (light blue) with other connective tissue forming a structure known as a capsule. The head of the humerus fits into a 'socket' formed by the shoulder bones (brown). The collar bone (clavicle) is at upper left, and the scapula (shoulder blade) is at right. The red area (centre left) within the capsule indicates inflammation due to infection.
