What constitutes an Idyllic Childhood? Maybe a swing in an apple tree, with puffy clouds overhead and pretty flowers on the ground. Rain in the distance on fields of flowers. Mountains even further away, and one that just might be a volcano, but not to worry -- it's far away.

This mixed media piece was made from various sizes and colors of plastic lids (forming the tree, flowers, and clouds), yogurt cup lids painted blue and green (the sky and ground), skewers covered with pencil sharpener debris (the tree trunk and roots), buttons and small rubber bands (details on the flowers and tree), and lancets, normally used for testing blood sugar, painted green (the grass). The rain was made with iridescent filament, and the mountains and flower fields with acrylic paint.

"Idyllic Childhood" received Honorable Mention at the 2014 Great New York State Fair, Fine Art Competition, Amateur Mixed Media, with the title "Idyllic Childhood, Scary Diagnosis." I decided to drop the second half of the title as I decided it didn't fit as well.

UPDATE 2021: I've just recently discovered a word for the specific kind of artwork I like to do, which I've been calling "junk art": Bricolage, which then makes me a bricoleur. Now doesn't that sound so much better than junk art? LOL Bricolage (from the French), when referring to art, is to "use a diverse range of non-traditional art materials." That definition comes from www.tate.org.uk. The same website states: "Arte povera artists constructed sculptures out of rubbish in an attempt to devalue the art object and assert the value of the ordinary and everyday." I don't make arte povera -- my goal is always to elevate the items I'm using, not to devalue my final pieces by using low-value items.
