Description
Honey bee visits a fragrant and pollen-rich water lily, a lovely sight! But bees, essential to agriculture, are threatened with extinction. Research continues into their dying-off, and the results indicate the problem is man-made and worse than first thought. It's not only the pesticides, mainly the neonicotinoids, but also the fungicides. Though the bees are not directly killed by them, it makes them susceptible to the parasite, nosemae ceranae, which is specifically implicated in colony collapse disorder. It looks like a race between finding alternatives to current agricultural chemicals and the eradication of a wonderful and vital species. Organic farming should avoid this and many other current agricultural problems, but is it feasible in today's world? Should the bees disappear, life for other life, including humans, will be much more difficult.
