Description
This is the entry of the church of Santa Maria del Popolo, an Augustinian church in Rome located on the north side of the Piazza del Popolo. The plain facade hides an interior that includes works by several famous artists, architects and sculptors. Perhaps one of the more famous works within is the Chigi Chapel, designed by Raphael as a private funerary chapel. A chapel was built on this site in 1099; the chapel became a church and given to the Augustinians in the first half of the 13th century. Visiting churches in Rome is one way to see fantastic artworks, but visiting during services is discouraged, as shown by the closed door.
