Description
Stopped at the first viewpoint along Hermit Road, and caught this shot. Photographs really do not do the Grand Canyon justice, it can only capture small areas of the over 200 mile long and one mile deep Grand Canyon National park.
For individuals with limitations (be it physical or time), there is the South Rim Drive 35 miles. Split into two segments. The West Rim 8 miles to Hermit's Rest. There are several overlooks along the way, including Mohave Point and Hopi Point, as well as the Powell Memorial. From March to December, access to Hermit's Rest is restricted to the free shuttle provided by the Park Service.Grand Canyon National Park. (Unless you have a Disabled Pass, then you can use your own vehicle.) The East Rim is 25 miles out to Desert View" and is open to private vehicles year round.
For individuals interested in a leisurely stroll along the canyon rim, the Rim Trail runs west from the Pipe Creek viewpoint (east of Mather Point) for about 8 miles paved, and an additional 7 miles miles unpaved to Hermit's Rest. A hike can begin almost anywhere along this trail, and a shuttle can return the hiker to their point of origination. Mather Point, the first view most people reach when entering from the South Entrance, is a popular place to begin.
Tourists wishing for a more vertical perspective can board helicopters and small airplanes in Las Vegas, Phoenix and Grand Canyon National Park Airport (7 miles from the South Rim) for canyon flyovers. Scenic flights are no longer allowed to fly within 1,500 feet of the rim within the Grand Canyon National Park because of a late 1990s crash. Several companies offer flights that descend into and land 3,500 feet in the Grand Canyon in Hualapai Indian Territory.
