Encompassing more than 50 acres (20 hectares) of prime Chicago lakefront territory, Navy Pier is a city within the city. With shopping, restaurants, parks and gardens, museums, stages and attractions galore, this Chicago landmark attracts millions every year.
Navy Pier has been an entertainment venue, a university, a naval base, an army base, a convention center, a food storage facility and, well, a pier. It has hosted stars and festivals, and it has been the home of sporting events, namely boxing, tennis, swimming and in 1921, a race between airplanes and pigeons. (The pigeons won.)
Located on Lake Michigan just to the north of the mouth of the Chicago River, Navy Pier endures as a 3,000-foot-long exclamation mark in the Chicago tradition of public works. It's no wonder that Navy Pier is often considered one of the top things to do in Chicago.
