Description
Bicycle rickshaws (bici-taxis) are popular in Havana. Over a million were imported from China in the 1990's, providing an easy family transport system as well as another taxi service for the Cubans and tourists.
This one was sighted in Old Havana, La Habana Vieja. Old Havana is considered to be the beating heart of the city. For about 350 years, it was actually the entire city. While at one time the area had been scheduled for demolition, its crumbling aristocratic grandeaur was saved when UNESCO placed it on the World Heritage List (1982) and restoration began. It is still ongoing, and now has the reputation of being the best-preserved colonial city in the Americas.
We did have a ride in one of these taxis, but have to say, even though it was night at the time, it was still hot and humid, and it was clear the driver was pumping his legs hard to move the tires along the rough spots in the road (some areas are cobblestones) working so hard for his money. An old Donna Summers tune came to mind.

We visit Asia a lot and these men always leave a memory with me as they certainly work hard for their money. Singapore still has them but in declining numbers these days. A photo speaks a thousand words.............Sandy
