Description
With this series of images, I mean to pay tribute to the Nineteenth Century School of naturalist painters most frequently associated with the watercolor paintings of John James Audubon. These butterflies and flowers are deliberately isolated from the natural world and then combined in ways that suggest a synergistic or visual compliment, like two puzzle pieces fitting together. They are presented on a page of paper treated to appear worn and aged, in an effort to give the images a sense of history, of a more primitive time when an artistic perspective and treatment were synonymous with science. The colors are kept intentionally subdued compared with the vibrant colors with which we photographically portray the natural world today.
