Description
"Pumpkin soup" is called in Haitian Creole, "Soup Joumou"; in French, it is called "Soupe de Giraumon".
For Haitians, "Soup Joumou" signifies Haitian Independence. What does "Soup Joumou" has to do with Haitian Independence? All that relates to Independence!!!
During slavery, "Pumpkin Soup"was pleasing to eat. It was considered too refined for the slaves' sense of taste. Slaves were not allowed to drink the soup they had prepared for their slave master. On November 18, 1803, the slaves defeated Napoleon's Army (about 14,000 professionally trained French troops). On January 1, 1804, Jean Jacques Dessalines declared Haiti, "a free Republic". Dessalines ordered everyone to drink "Pumpkin Soup". "Pumpkin Soup" is a symbol of independence, unity, brotherhood, and sisterhood. Haitians all over the world drink pumpkin soup (soup joumou) every January first since 1804. It is a Haitian tradition.
The whole world should remember that day, (January 1, 1804) when the first black-led nation in the world, and the only country whose independence was gained after a successful slave revolution.
Happy Haitian Independence Day! Enjoy!!!
