Description
Giant Turtles in the Pamplemousse Botanical Garden.
The tortoises were reportedly abundant on all of the islands, however their numbers were rapidly reduced due to intensive harvesting by man (for oil and food) and the predation of freshly laid eggs by introduced predators such as pigs and rats. The giant tortoises now seen on Mauritius are all derived from grandparent stock imported from the Seychelles in the 1880s, following the recommendation of Charles Darwin.
