Description
While gondolas were once used regularly by Venetians, especially by the more well-to-do; Vaporetti (water-taxi or water-bus) have become the main means of water transportation in Venice.
A couple of hundred years ago there were about 10,000 gondolas but today there are only about 500.
A gondola is flat, made of wood and is about 11 meters long, weighing 600 kg; it is hand-built in special workshops called squeri and there are still a few remaining today.

I sense a story here, Pennie: Once upon a canal, three gondoliers got lost--or pretended to--and their hapless tourist-passengers, already upset over the unexpected extra charge for blankets... (inspired by the 'silvery' finish you've given this narrative shot).

That's cute Joseph :). Perhaps the story would go.....Once upon a canal, there were three gondoliers providing tourists with a tour of the labyrinth of canals. It was a chilly day, but they were warmed by cozy blankets as they enjoyed the historical architecture and soothing movement of the gondolas. What do you think?
