Gladiolus (from Latin, the diminutive of gladius, a sword) is a genus of perennial bulbous flowering plants in the iris family (Iridaceae). It is sometimes called the 'Sword lily', but usually by its generic name (plural gladioli).
Gladioli have a unique long and pointed shape. Because of their shape, they are named after the Latin word “gladius”, meaning sword. ... Because of their association with gladiators, the gladiolus flower meaning is strength and integrity. They also symbolize infatuation.
