Description
This is a detail shot of the Elisabeth Gate (Elisabethentor) of Germany's Heidelberg Castle.
It is said that 400 years ago in 1615, Frederick V had it built overnight as a surprise birthday gift for his 19-year-old wife, Princess Elizabeth Stuart (the daughter of King James I of England), whom the Germans called the Pearl of Britannia. Though there is no documentation for the speed of the monument's erection, the fact that the stones on the back side of the gate were left in an unfinished state tends to support the legend.
The gate led to a lovely garden and was designed in the style of a triumphal arch by architect Salomon de Caus, who accompanied Elizabeth from England to her new home. An additional fact of interest is that Elizabeth and Frederick's union on Valentine's Day in 1613 was celebrated in the poem Epithalamion by John Donne.
