Description
The giant water lily (Victoria amazonica) produces the largest lily pad among all water lily species. The giant water lily's leaves may grow as large as 8 to 9 feet in diameter, and a very large pad is capable of supporting up to 100 pounds of weight. The leaves have distinctively upturned edges and thorny undersides covered with a thick pattern of ribs; air trapped between the ribs under the leaves helps them float on the surface of the water. Giant water lilies may be grown as annuals in temperate climates.
