Description
President George Washington became a Freemason as a young man in the mid-1700s, and rose to become the most famous member of the fraternal organization in the United States, a position he still holds nearly three hundred years after his initiation. This bust of Washington is on the grounds of the House of the Temple, formally known as the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry for the Southern Jurisdiction of the United States of America. The grand, classically-styled building is at 1733 16th Street in the Dupont Circle neighborhood of Washington, D.C., and the sculpture can be found in the yard behind the building, along S Street. The bust was designed by sculptor Avard T. Fairbanks in 1975.
