Description
When I was in college at Furman University ('85), Greenville, SC, the lake and waterfowl were a source of pride, even though, swans can be one of the most aggressive birds out there. One had nested near the student center. The Maintenance Department re-routed a drain that was close to their nest. Then we all waited. It was a wonderful opportunity to observe the mates as they cared for their eggs. Of course, we were all anticipating our ugly ducklings. I was in the Student Center one day and looked out in horror as two young boys (10 ish) were harrassing the swan on the nest. By the time I and others made it out there, the boys had forced the swan off the nest with pebbles. One of the most horrific sights I have ever seen awaited us as we approached to see the yellow yolk of the eggs. All of the large beautiful eggs had been broken. The boys, of course, scattered. What I assume was the mother swan lingered nearby with an cry/whine that I can still remember today more years beyond that day than I care to count.
So here is a tribute to those mates on that day. Perhaps this is one of their later ugly ducklings now nesting in a safer place on her own soon to be beautiful swans.
