Description
Fort Warren is located on George's Island in Boston Harbor. It housed just over 1,000 Confederate military and political prisoners from during the Civil War. Only 13 died, mostly by drowning while attempting to escape. It then was used by the US Army during World War I and II as a defense facility. It was named for Revolutionary war hero Dr. Joseph Warren who sent Paul Revere on his famous ride. Dr. Warren was killed at the Battle of Bunker Hill. The grass land you see is the parade ground that once provided space for infantry training and inspections as well as off-duty activities such as baseball games inside the pentagon shaped fort.
