Description
The summit of Mount Battie towers over Camden Maine. There are several trails and the auto road that will take you up to the summit and on this day my wife and I walked the auto road because the road was still closed in early April. The stone tower on Mount Battie is a recent addition in 1921 as a World War I Memorial. Some years before that a wooden structure called the summit house was built there and then it was turned into a summer hotel which opened in 1900. This only lasted until 1918 when the structure burned down. From the top of Mount Battie you can look down on the town of Camden and if harbor and during the summer into the autumn months you can see the masts of the tall ships anchored in the harbor. Further to the north you can see Penobscot Bay and on a clear day you can see desert isle which is better known as Acadia national Park.
