Description
Foetal tooth. Light micrograph of a section through a developing tooth from a foetus. The first set of teeth begin to develop around six weeks after conception. At centre is the pulp, which consists of blood vessels (seen here with red blood cells), nerves and connective tissue. At the edge of the pulp is a layer of odontoblasts. These cells secrete dentin (magenta). The layer between the odontoblasts and dentin is predentin (light pink). The white layer is a gap, introduced by the sectioning process. Above it is the developing enamel covering the crown of the tooth. The enamel is secreted by ameloblast cells above the enamel.
