Description
The Golden Silk Spider also known as Florida Banana Spider is relatively harmless. They are not prone to attack or bite people or pets. They are one of the largest species of spiders (not classified as tarantulas) in North America. There are called golden silk or banana spiders because of the yellow colored silk web that they weave.

wonderful macro of a beautiful spider. I've never seen a picture of a spider with tuff's of hair like a groomed poodle. Interesting picture.

Since this is a macro shot it should not be too big...I have heard of spitting cobras but spiders ???? That is something for Wikipedia I guess to clarify...
Roger Wedegis replied:
Michel, even though this is a macro, this girl was about as big as my hand. I didn't get close enough to be spit on!!!

Growing up in south Florida, I so hated running into their webs while playing in the woods. Oh they seemed huge and oh so creepy. The Florida rural legend was that if they spit in your eye you would go blind.... now I don't know if spiders spit or not ... haha. VF
Roger Wedegis replied:
Thank you Christy! I don't think I'd care to have a spider spit at me, harmless or not!

That's a scary looking creature. We have Black Widows and they bad enough, would not want to find that in my bed!! Great capture! F/V
Roger Wedegis replied:
Thank you Barbara! I'd stay away from the black widows, but these guys are supposed to be harmless :)
