This is a view of the sculpture known as the Rape of the Sabine Women, as seen from inside the Loggia dei Lanzi with the Palazzo Vecchio behind. There is a version of this image without the texture.

This was where my day started. I spent countless hours sitting by this magnificent sculpture. A place of peace for me...

I had been to Florence in 1999 and had shot one single picture of this breathtaking composition. However, when I first arrived to Florence again in 2015 y entered the old town through the Ponte Vecchio and went straight away to greet this statue. I was not aware it had had such an impact in me, but I guess it did.

The Rape of the Sabine Women was sculpted from one single block of marble by Giambologna around 1582 with the idea of placing it in the Loggia. It has remained there ever since.

The Palazzo Vecchio, was and is the town-hall of Florence. For a while, however, it was the Medici's stronghold and was connected through a gallery that crosses the Arno river over the Ponte Vecchio, with their official residence.

On the bottom left, the replica of Michelangelo's David, stands where the original used to be, until a piece of furniture thrown out of a window of the Palazzo during some riots tore one of its arms off.

What can I say about Florence that has not been already said... If you care for beauty at all, you should visit Florence at least once.

To me, it was a place to forget about myself in troubled times and to live outwards for a few days, surrounded by all this overwhelming beauty that embraced and quietly rocked me. Florence took care of me and sent me home, not healed, but with hope of healing.

I spent five days in Florence by myself. I took the time to wander these old streets that transformed and filled the fate of medieval Europe with hope, as it did with me. I sat on stairs, or by the river, spent long time in the Loggia, by the sculpture of the Rape of the Sabine Women, which fascinates me, took the time to read, to reflect, to wait, and to return to the right places at the right time to get the right light.

I believe shot some of my best pictures ever on these days I spent in Florence while my heart bled. To me, this old city has become specially dear, and so have the pictures I shot, so I might not be too objective about them. You can judge for yourselves...

One thing I do know. I will return.
