Description
I got up before dawn on Friday morning looking for one last bit of inspiration before we had to book out. I set my easel up on the same rocks as #0840 "Killarney Rocks!" and painted a sunrise. The distant islands seemed to float in the reflection of the sunrise on the calm water. It was dark when I started and fairly bright by the time I was done.
The water was warm and the air fairly cool setting the stage for the mirage. Mirages are generated by two layers of air that are at different temperatures. The warm waters of Georgian Bay warmed up the air enough to affect the density of the air above it - this air was less dense. As the sunrise light passed through the air it passed through less dense air causing the rays of light to bend upward. This happens especially when the light hits the boundary at an extreme angle. The further away the scene, the more extreme the angle that the light will hit making the mirage seem more realistic. The lake is no longer visible and one sees the sunrise sky in the distance making it look like the islands are floating in the sea of red and orange.
