Description
Tropical sunset with floral and Flamingo.
"Flamingo Facts";
Flamingos grow to 3-5 ft. tall and weigh 5-6 pounds.
Males are generally slightly larger than females.
Flamingos live in a habitat of low level water such as lagoons, mud flats, or lakes.
They like to wade in search of food.
They are very social and live in groups of up to 10,000 birds.
They get most of their food by filtering mud and water in their bills to eat insects and crustaceans like shrimp.
Their pink coloring comes from the pigments in their food, called cartenoids.
Cartenoids are the same thing that give carrots their orange color.
Flamingos have to run in order to gather speed before they can take off for flight.
They often fly in large flocks.
Parent flamingos care for their young up to 6 years.
Flamingos have a number of interesting rituals or displays.
One of them is called marching, where a tight group walk together in one direction and then suddenly switch directions all at once.
They are one of the longest living birds, often up to 40 years old.
Sometimes flocks in Africa can reach as much as 1 million birds, making them the largest flocks in the world.
Flamingos make their nests in the mud, producing one large egg in which both parents care for.
