Description
This is a portrait of my father. In the original black and white photo I based my painting on, he was about 24 years old and boating on Forest Lake in Minnesota with my mother. At the time they were only dating seriously. What prompted me to title this painting, "Fishing in the Gene Pool", is my mom said he used to ask her about her family almost as if he was ensuring she had good genetics! Shortly after, he did finally propose. He went off to war, and served in the Fiji Islands in the army air corps in World War II. Eventually they had 5 children; I am the youngest. My dad used to look very much like John Wayne. He actually used to be asked for autographs when he was traveling. (Especially when he was in California!) When I was a kid we'd see every John Wayne movie they produced. Every time I saw one I felt like my father was up there on the silver screen! I loved my father very much and still do even though he's been gone many years now. This portrait is dedicated to him. Love you, dad...

Hi Norman, many thanks for your kind words. I love the old photos...I'll probably do more of this in the years to come. As a kid , I always loved this photo of my dad. It was fun bringing him to life again. My husband and I would love to live on that lake someday when we retire. I'm sure when that day comes, my dad will be smiling down on us! You do some interesting work too. Where would we be without our painting?? Keep painting! Best regards, Peggy
