Description
Gastric ulcer. False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the stomach lining surrounding a gastric ulcer. Normal mucous membrane appears light green, and eroded, ulcerated regions, part of the thin, underlying lamina propria, appear in pink. Gastric ulcers result from an acid attack on tissue that becomes unprotected by the mucosa. Acute cases show erosion of the stomach's muscle wall and its arteries. The mucous membrane that comprises the lining of the stomach consists of simple columnar cells that synthesize & secrete considerable amounts of mucous. Magnification x200 at 6x7cm size.
