Description
Guess what I got for my Birthday?!!
The crazy Canon MP-E 65mm 1-5X Macro lens. This is macro on steroids and has a reputation as the hardest of all lenses to use. It start off where normal 1:1 macro lenses finish and goes up to 5:1 magnification (a grain of rice fills the frame!!!). here we have a rather small ant taken on a delicate white clematis petal in my garden in Sissinghurst, Kent, England. The detail you can get at this magnification is remarkable and the jaws (mandibles) are fearsome looking tools, almost something out of a SciFi movie. This was taken on my first day out with this remarkable bit of glass at full 5:1 magnification from a distance of 1.4 inches, lit courtesy of a home made rig from a tube of Pringles beaming and bending the light from my flash - I think a dedicated macro flash unit will be on my Christmas list this year :0)
