With the warmth of long days coming to an end and the bounty that nature provides for food becoming less frequent, the solitary crow can be seen perched and ready to pick the last piece of fruit a tree has to offer. The detailed layering and shape of the crow’s black and blue feathery plumage reverberate visually around the picture frame by the patterns formed by the weathered dry leaves. Figure and ground trade places as the blue sky of the background trades places with the leaf shapes, while creating an energetic field of color that highlights the blue reflective qualities on the feathery sheen of this solitary hungry bird. With one leg ever so slightly coming off the branch and with its sharp beak open, the eye immediately is immediately drawn to the one singular contrasting visual element of this artwork, that of the burnt orange roundness of the partially hidden fruit. The crow has found its daily nutrient and has fulfilled its search, much like the total image resounds as a visual feast that harkens the end of another yearly season.
