While visiting the grounds of the Old Westbury Gardens located in Old Westbury Long Island, New York. I decided to take a tour of the Old Westbury Mansion built by John Phipps the heir to the US Steel Fortune in New York. Walking through the mansion it brought you to another time, various movies have been filmed here and this mansion was the inspiration for the book and movie the Great Gatsby, due to the fact that it was not uncommon for a weekend to have a polo match on the front lawn or hundreds of people over and walking through the gardens. The dining room as seen in this photo is prohibited from having anybody enter it, but I was still able to get off a nice photo showing the whole room in all of its glory with the elegant dining room table and fancy chairs to the fabulous fireplace and various paintings of the Phipps family hanging around the room with fancy lights on them along with the gorgeous chandelier hanging over the dining room table and with all of the fancy silver ware set up on the table. To me this photo would look perfect in someone's den, dining room or living room as it shows a piece of history and has so many interesting things to view.
For more information on the Old Westbury Mansion please read below;
Old Westbury Gardens is the former estate of John Shaffer Phipps (18741958), heir to a U.S. Steel fortune, in Nassau County, New York. Work on the estate began in 1903, when John Shaffer Phipps promised his British fiance Margarita he would build her a home in the United States that resembled her family estate in Battle Abbey. The estate was ready for Phipps, his wife and their children in 1906. Westbury House, the Charles II-style mansion designed by George A. Crawley, contains 23 rooms. The grounds cover 160 acres (0.65 km2). Scenes of the driveway were used in the 1970 film Love Story to depict the entrance to the home of Ryan O'Neal's character.
Other movies filmed on the grounds include North by Northwest, The Age of Innocence, The Manchurian Candidate (2004), Wolf, Hitch, Cruel Intentions, 8MM, Bernard and Doris, American Gangster, and To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar. Scenes from the television series, Royal Pains and Gossip Girl also used the location in filming.
It served as the inspiration for the Buchanan Estate featured in Baz Lurhmann's 2013 film adaption of The Great Gatsby by his wife and production designer Catherine Martin. Mrs. Henry Phipps and Her Grandson Winston by John Singer Sargent (1906/07). The painting Mrs. Henry Phipps and Her Grandson Winston by John Singer Sargent hangs in the dining room. Winston Churchill was the child's godfather.
