Description
Egyptian sarcophagus. 17th-century artwork of the ornate covering, wooden coffin, and embalmed mummy of an Ancient Egyptian sarcophagus. Such remains date back thousands of years. This engraving is from 'Africa' (1670) by the London-based Scottish cartographer John Ogilby (1600-1676). This 767-page atlas describes the known lands and peoples of Africa, with 57 plate engravings of maps and artworks. Largely based on the 1668 work 'Naukeurige Beshryvinge der Afrikaenesche gewesten' by Dutch geographer Olfert Dapper, the engravings were by 17th-century Dutch artist Jacob van Meurs.
