Heligoland is a small German archipelago in the North Sea.The main island is commonly divided into the Unterland ("Lower Land") at sea level, the Oberland ("Upper Land") consisting of the plateau visible in the picture.
This digital painting is from a photograph taken circa 1895. These great old colorized photographs remember a time gone by. But time has deteriorated many of them. My goal is that through painting them they are restored to life. I hope they touch you as they do me.
