Description
The Blackwater Natural Bridge of Wyoming is one of the largest natural arches in the world. Remarkably shaped like the head of one of our mountain eagles, it is a dramatic sight. So why have you never heard of it? It is very little known because it is deep in the Washakie Wilderness of the Shoshone National Forest. Although it has not been officially measured that I know of, informal estimates put the size of the eagle aperture at about 250 feet tall. Unlike the more well-known natural arches of the American Southwest, which are sedimentary, the rocks that form the Eagle Arch are volcanic. I myself have only seen this incredible natural feature in photographs, and it is one of my goals in life to ride horseback to see it in person.

Hi Dawn, What an incredible place that you have so beautifully captured in this gorgeous dramatic painting! We can only imagine what happens up there when winter takes over the land. I like how you show the ungulates. I often wonder how they survive winter. We have hiked in the general area many times but never right there but I was so intrigued, I studied the maps. It is hard when one's legs will only carry them so far but the area is so gorgeous. We hiked the Pahaska-Sunlight Trail last spring and ran into a grizzly up close.
