Description
lWhile wandering through the canyons around Sedona, Az I came across numerous medicine wheels constructed in a variety of ways. This dreamy, surreal landscape is from my memories of the beautiful canyons and desert, gnarled, twisted trees ,glorious sunrises and sunsets, refreshing creek water and of course the medicine They always seemed to call to me,and when I could I would spend time meditating and walking the wheel, always ending in the center. The medicine wheel is many things, depending on how you choose to use it:to center your consciousness,as an aid in meditation, for protection, for some as an altar,or as a way to honor the forces of nature, the four directions, the seasons and months of the year, the energies or elements of earth, air, fire, water and ether. There are different Native American teachings and ways of constructing the wheel, the New Age people also use variations of the medicine wheel. Some people leave offerings in the center of the wheel, frequently a stone of crystal. At one point I was with a group for a medicine wheel teaching and meditation, which was a very powerful experience. But I was equally happy to experience the wheel alone. The experience was to me similar to walking a labryinth. Both are tools for focusing and connecting to the energies of the universe -a walk along a scared path, for calming the chaos of the waking mind and finding ones center or balance.
The wheels are traditionally composed of stones - some like the one pictured here and some with just a large center stone and four large stones to mark the four directions
