Description
Gastineau Channel is the channel between Douglas Island and mainland Juneau, Alaska. This was taken from Sandy Beach, looking down the channel and away from Juneau. If you have visited Juneau on a cruise ship, you have navigated this channel.
Gastineau Channel was probably named for John Gastineau, an English Civil Engineer and Surveyor. The channel is navigable by large ships only as far as the Juneau-Douglas Bridge, approximately 9.7 miles (15.6 km). Between the bridge and Juneau International Airport, approximately 8.1 miles, it is navigable only by smaller craft and only at high tide.
