Description
A minimal composition of a silhouetted crow or raven painted onto page 56 of an old book entitled, entertainingly, High In The Rockies, Door Knobs And Hinges, Son is a painting using one of my favorite subjects and up cycling part of a vintage book. The title is taken from an expression in the text.
*****
The original text is High In The Rockies, by Maude Linstrom Frandsen, published in 1957, and based on Colorado history. I sometimes enjoy the challenges and rewards of painting repurposed paper from outdated, aging, yellowing and falling apart books and sheet music. The paper proves ideal for a warm, natural appearance that compliments natural subjects, although it is tricky to work on.
*****
I have always loved crows and ravens. I feel a mysterious connection to them; the shiny, iridescent layered colors of the feathers, dark silhouette, mischievous, playful nature, raucous cawing, magical and otherworldly associations, myths and legends, goofy walk, soaring flight, strong beak, delightful personality.........

Up cycling is the process of converting waste materials or useless products into new materials or products of better quality or for better environmental value.
The first recorded use of the term up cycling was by Reiner Pilz of Pilz GmbH in an article by Thornton Kay of Salvo in 1994.
