It's been quite a long time since a doctor was able to sit beside you during a procedure such as this one. The X-Ray is a rather invasive impersonal procedure filled with awkward positions, where you have to balance yourself in a strange way, as the doctor runs from the room.
There is a reason for the running. X-ray's can cause cancer, its chocked full of radiation. Thing is people in those days had no idea what that was. And in fact even gave people radiated water to cure things internally.
This machine is an old X-ray, that globe on the top is the X-ray bulb, totally exposed. Anyone that sits in front of, near or anyone in that room is getting a good dose of radiation poisoning. Maybe its the reason that guy is so bald...
It wasn't until the 1950's when they discovered it was a bad thing. During those years however they made all kinds of crazy things using X-rays, such as shoe fitting and even police inspection devices.
