Description
This is Heidelberg Castle, the ruins of a huge structure originally built in the 13th century, although most of the surviving remnants are Renaissance or Baroque. It was destroyed several times: by a thunderbolt in 1537, by the French in the late 17th century, and then again by lightning in 1764. It is built from red sandstone of the nearby Neckar region and abounds with sculpture. This charming figure I would guess to be Diana, Roman goddess of the hunt, as I have read that classical goddesses were included and as she seems to have a quiver nearby and lion hunting boots. I love the diagonal upward stripes of ornate architectural detail -- and how they are opposed by the clean, strong steel railings, running diagonally the other way, of the reconstruction behind the openings.
