Dentistry caricature. 18th-century artwork with the Italian title 'Il Cavadenti' (The Toothpuller). At left, a dentist, bracing himself against a crouching assistant, is using steel pliers to pull a patient's tooth. Before the development of anaesthetics, tooth extraction was extremely painful. The woman being comforted at right has fainted at the sight and sounds of the scene. This artwork is a watercolour, artist unknown.
