Description
This is a 30 inch by 40 inch gallery wrapped acrylic painting. It is based on a scene that I saw in front of the Prato Restaurant in Winter Park on Park Avenue in Orlando, Florida. I was enjoying an afternoon with my son and son-in-law. As we talked and laughed about our day, we noticed these two young women. None of us know them. I changed their faces and the background. I wanted the focus to be on the women rather than on the complicated background of the interior of the restaurant. We were all sitting outside in front of the restaurant. It was kinda like a patio, which seemed to emphasize the park of Park Avenue.
We all noticed that the two women never seemed to speak with each other. They seemed to be totally oblivious to all that was going on around them. I liked that this seems to be such a typical scene of people together these days. They were focused on their little mobile phones. They might have been chatting with each other this way. Who knows? Never-the-less, it is fun to speculate on what theywere doing on their cell phones. They seemed oblivious to each other and to all that was going on around them.
I took liberties with the colors because I was having fun with them. It obviously isn't meant to be absolutely realistic. I haven't painted a still-life in awhile. I enjoyed the exercise of creating all the shapes of the items on their little table. The bucket had bread in it covered by a napkin. It was nice to paint both dark and blonde hair. It was a fun thing to indicate the sweater on one of the woman without getting overly detailed. The diaphanous blouse was fun to toy with. I really loved trying to give the sense of it without being slavish to the reality.

Stunning painting and mastery of the media!!! The composition is classical; however, the interaction and engagement are commonplace in today's society.

Love this, AnnaJo! When I used to fly regularly…this was a familiar scene within families…they often talked to each other …two chairs down …on the phone…I was mesmerized how they even want to do that! Generation…gap…:-) thank you SO Much For your unwavering support of the contest series blog…love all your entries…they ALL are tickling my funny bine. WONDERful, lighthearted Instrumentalist Images!

Thank you so much, Laurel. I painted this several years ago and it seems that it has even gotten worse. I mean that people are more involved with their phone than they are with those around them. Glad that you enjoyed this.
