Description
I titled this "Contrasts," as I think this image takes that word to so many levels. The contrast of man's architectural genius to the architectural genius of God or the Universe or Mother Nature in the unique cactus field, and rolling hills ... the contrast of textures, light and shadow ... all just amazed me. I actually think my eyes glazed over when the car pulled up and I hopped out with my camera.
My visit to Arizona was a few years ago, but even now I can hardly imagine a place more different to the East Coast of the US, where I'm from. This particular shot was taken at the Western District, Red Hills Saguaro National Park Visitor Center, not too far from Tucson, Arizona. I barely got inside the visitor's center building itself, actually have no memory of it at all, lol, I was so enthralled with the play of light and shadow going on outside.
I have done a little research and have not been able to come up with the name of the architect. Have contacted the people at the Visitor's Center, and hopefully they will be getting back to me. Just as photographers and artists like to be credited back and acknowledged when our own work is admired, I think the same should hold true for the artists who create such truly amazing works of art as this building truly is.
I was using the Nikon D40x and the 18-200mm vr Nikkor lens. Taken April 17, 2009.

We were there a couple of weeks ago and were very impressed, Lois....they do a movie in a gorgeous theater with an excellent sound system. When the movie is over they raise the drapes and we see the forest of Saguaros and mountains through huge windows.....almost the entire wall is a window! Lovely capture of this amazing place! Thanks, Jerry ... I've got at least one more shot here on FAA of this place (and one waiting in the computer-wings) ... I walked up and saw those shadows and nearly fainted. The architect was a genius. I looked him up a few years ago and found a reference to Ben Stokke, then someone named Rick Joy ... but then I got confused and gave up, lol!!

Wonderful juxtaposition of barren land in the distance, desert cacti, and elegant architecture with its fascinating shadows, Lois! f/l

Now you've gone and made me homesick for Tucson. I love your use of light and shadow in this image.
Lois Bryan replied:
Hey Eric, I'm sorry ... but I'm honored that it brought you back for just a minute ... thank you!!!
